"Beyond the Stage" Installation

The Beyond the Stage Exhibition presented a retrospective of the twelve years of activity of the Dançando com a Diferença Group, from the implementation of the concept of Inclusive Dance to the process of internationalization and dissemination of the concept, currently underway.

The result of a collaboration between the Associação dos Amigos da Arte Inclusiva - Dançando com a Diferença (AAAIDD) and the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (Madeira-ITI) of the University of Madeira (UMa), this work portrays different facets of the history of the Dançando com a Diferença project, with greater emphasis on the company resident at the Casa das Mudas Arts Centre, the Grupo Dançando com a Diferença and its history.

The collaboration between AAAIDD and M-ITI arose in the scope of the Master in Computer Engineering (MEI), a 2nd cycle Bologna course, where the student Hugo Samuel Abreu Gonçalves has been concluding a research under the theme "MUSIC VISUALIZATION", under the guidance of Professor Mon-Chu Chen.

Madeira-ITI is the first innovation institute of the University of Madeira, established as a private non-profit association dedicated to research and development, whose founding members are the University of Madeira, Madeira Tecnopolo S.A. and Carnegie Mellon University. It operates in the multidisciplinary domain of Human-Computer Interaction, encapsulating contributions from the areas of Computer Science, Psychology and Design in order to answer important scientific and technological challenges that are relevant to society and have a significant economic impact.

"As it is an appanage of Madeira-ITI, we try that the work developed by students have practical application in the market, so the connection to the industry is great, creating real challenges for students, identical to what they will later find in the exercise of their profession" said Dulce Pacheco, Academic and Marketing Coordinator of Madeira-ITI. Henrique Amoedo, artistic director of Dançando com a Diferença, agrees with this comment and further states that "this partnership opens up a series of other possibilities that can be explored both in performance environments and in educational and therapeutic support actions. I hope that in the very near future we will be creating new products together.

"Seven different environments are presented in Space 116. Some of them are based on the use of motion capture sensors, namely the Kinect used in the XBOX 360 consoles, which through this real-time capture convert the images/movements into a mix of effects that are projected on walls/shapes or even reproduced on televisions. All this interaction brings the performers and the audience closer together, allowing them to be an integral part of the installation," said Hugo Gonçalves, who also made a point of mentioning that "all this work has the great collaboration of Dançando com a Diferença, of M-ITI, which made most of the resources available so that the installation could be carried out, and also two large international software companies that sponsor the project with free software licenses, namely DELICODE and MADMAPPER, in addition to the location given by the managers of Espaço 116.

The union of science and art were present in this project that counted with the associated creators, Henrique Amoedo, Hugo Gonçalves, Maurício Freitas, Mickaella Dantas, Monchu Chen, Telmo Ferreira, all under the artistic direction of Henrique Amoedo.
